Envisat images reveal Phlegrean Fields’ volcanic region’s upliftment!

Do you know, the volcanic region of the Phlegrean Fields has uplifted about 2.8 centimeters from 2005 to 2006? ESA has used a sophisticated version of ‘spot the difference’ in its Envisat satellite to successfully reveal this phenomenon.

The images acquired using the state-of-art-technology – the Differential SAR Interferometry (DInSAR) – clearly mapped the changes in the caldera (a ring-shaped region including several volcanoes). With the help of these images, scientists at the Institute for the Electromagnetic Sensing of the Environment (IREA) of the Italian National Research Council have discovered that the area has uplifted about 2.8 centimeters from 2005 to 2006.

The volcanic region is located in southern Italy near the city of Naples. It has entered a new uplift phase.
