Energy-efficient way to Desalinate seawater using ocean waves!

UK researchers have observed that ocean waves could be used as an energy-efficient way for desalinating seawater. Unlike the conventional purification plants that have high demands for energy, the rocking motion of floating buoys could be effectively exploited for driving a pump system for desalination.

Salter and colleagues are developing a duck-shaped device that purifies seawater by driving a pump with its rocking motion. They believe that this would help reduce the demand for high energy of conventional desalination plants.

It, thus, could be installed in arid countries – like Australia and Israel — where access to seawater is huge.
