Eco Tech: World’s first landfill-powered hydrogen station to be built in South Korea

Eco Factor: Hydrogen generating station uses landfill gas as raw material for a clean fuel.

Hydrogen is undoubtedly the fuel the world needs for a green future. Auto makers have already rolled out demonstration vehicles that use hydrogen as a source of energy, but nothing major has happened due to the lack of adequate infrastructure of generating and storing hydrogen fuel.

The South Korean government has signed a MOU with SK Engineering & Construction and oil refiner SK Energy to develop the world’s first hydrogen station that will be able to extract hydrogen from methane produced in landfills.

The plant will be located in Nanjido and will draw methane produced at a local landfill site. After separating the constituent compounds of methane, hydrogen will be produced and compressed to reach a purity level of 99.9%. The fuel generated will initially be used to power two buses and two cars that run on hydrogen fuel cells. The four vehicles will be supplied for free by Hyundai Motors for use on a test-drive basis.
