Eco Factor: Forklift powered by a diesel/electric hybrid engine.
Toyota Industries Corporation has announced the development of the world’s first hybrid forklift. The Geneo-Hybrid forklift carries a 2.5-liter diesel engine which is coupled with an NIMH battery pack and an electric motor. The forklift has a maximum load capacity of 3,500kg.
When operational, the forklift works in a series hybrid system where the diesel engine powers a generator which recharges the batteries on the move. While lifting load the forklift works in a parallel hybrid mode, where the electric motors work along with the diesel engine to generate the lifting force. Toyota claims that their hybrid engine offers a 50% improvement in fuel consumption and emissions.
