Eco Factor: Device processes grease to produce electricity and also provides hot water to building.

James Peret, an engineer by profession, has come up with a unique way of producing alternative energy. After putting in 80 hours every week for a year, Peret successfully developed a device that can provide energy by processing kitchen grease. He calls it the “Vegawatt” generator. Presently this system is delivering the Finz restaurant in Dedham with 5 kilowatts of energy per hour. The process starts with pouring of used deep-fryer oil that undergoes multistage cleaning and filtration to prepare oil. Oil is burned through heat drawn from the exhaust system and processed grease is moved into a tank linked with the generator. The grease is then supplied to power the 15-horsepower diesel generator.

The Vegawatt is capable of processing 80 gallons of grease a week and as estimated, it saves approximately $1,000 a month. Heat produced from the generator is utilized to deliver warm water to the building’s pipes. Peret is further looking to sell his invention through his start-up, Owl Power Company.
