Eco Factor: Solar-powered steam plant to aid in the recovery of heavy oils.

Solar energy is mostly used to generate green electricity for the masses. However, Chevron has found another possible use of the future of energy tech to pump oil from ageing oil wells in central California. The company disclosed the plans to use solar thermal technology from BrightSource Energy for the process.

The system will use 7000 mirrors to reflect light onto a tower to make steam. While concentrating solar plants use this steam to run turbines generating electricity, Chevron will pump steam underground to heat up heavy oils and make them easier to extract. Construction on the plant is slated to commence by the end of next year.
