Eco Tech: Bangladesh to leap an hour in time to conserve energy

one hour leap for bangladesh

Eco Factor: Bangladesh bids to save energy by moving clocks forward by one hour.

While the world still struggles to turn off their lights for just one hour to show some respect to our planet during Earth Hour, Bangladesh is setting up for an extreme measure, which till date has not been practiced anywhere else in the world. The country will set clocks forward by an hour Friday, turning 11 pm into midnight. The effort would allow the residents to make better use of daylight and save energy during night.

This change in time would mean that Bangladeshis would practically begin their work an hour earlier and end it too an hour earlier than usual. This would allow all offices to end their work before sundown, especially during these summer months. While no exact number was given on the amount of energy that is expected to be saved by moving from GMT+6 to GMT+7, the authorities believe that the 103-day exercise, which is scheduled to end October 1, will account for up to a 5% reduction in the national power demand.

The power savings are expected to be the most during the evening peak hour of 7PM to 8PM, which would be equivalent to 200MW. This change in time would also mean that the 1,000MW and 2,000MW of load shedding during peak hours daily will also be reduced.
