Eco Tech: Alternative Fuel Sciences’ ZeroFuel cars run on urea

Eco Factor: Zero-emission cars powered by ZeroFuel.

The emission problem doesn’t come with cars but with the fuel that is burned in their internal combustion engines. Most cars today are powered by fossil fuels, which when burned emit a mixture of greenhouse gases that end up polluting the environment and escalating the global warming process. Researchers at Alternative Fuel Sciences believe that a green change in the fuel could bring a paradigm shift in automobiles without any major change in engine technology.

Alternative Fuel Sciences have come up with a new kind of fuel, known as ZeroFuel, which when burned emits only nitrogen and water, making it a zero-emission vehicle. Apart from being a green source of power, the fuel is slated to be a true replacement for gasoline in cars and trucks with far greater efficiency and offering a dramatic increase in mileage. AFS believes that their fuel doesn’t give 100mpgs to an SUV, but it gives a decent 60mpg without any emissions.

The ZeroFuel is a safe energy carrier of ammonia and hydrogen and is obtained chemically in the form of carbamide or simply urea. Made from a mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide, carbamide is usually used as a fertilizer and has a worldwide production of 130 million tons. ZeroFuel is made by mixing carbamide with ordinary tap water. In its stable state ZeroFuel isn’t toxic, flammable or explosive. It changes into a combustible fuel by use of a “reformer,” which is AFS’s patented technology.

The reformer changes ZeroFuel into ammonia and hydrogen, which is then injected into a vehicle using a conventional fuel-injection system. Apart from being a greener alternative to fossil fuels, another striking feature of the fuel is that ammonia’s octane level is over 130, which increases the overall performance of the vehicle in which it is used.
