Eco Factor: Structure powered by wind energy.
The best thing about the green movement is that it pushes the design envelope in directions never thought possible, and it’s always fantastic to realize the possibilities that renewable energy provides to designers who end up using their skills and the abundance of energy to develop some stunning pieces by merging art with technology. Designer Stefan Verstappen does have the skills and the technical knowledge to bring out designs which are green, practical and above all a necessity.
The Starry Night is one such design that makes use of the abundance of wind energy to create an artwork that can be seen for miles. The Starry Night artwork sits atop a pillar painted to suggest a sunset, and the system is based on a three blade Savonius turbine shaped in a triangle and studded with mirror tiles.
When wind blows during daytime, the turbine rotates and at the same time reflects sunlight to create a structure that can be seen for a couple of miles. During daytime the system recharges the on-board batteries using wind energy. After sunset the built-in sensors turn on three LED lights that are mounted on horizontal tubes aimed at the turbine.
