Eco Energy: DOE and Santa Barbara get new Solar Roofs

Eco Factor: The US Department of Energy and city of Santa Barbara install solar roofs for sustainable clean energy.

It seems that the Department of Energy (DOE) should have gone solar a lot earlier than this. For an energy organization that is so keen on promoting alternate energy, one wonders what took them so long. But finally the headquarters of the DOE has been fitted with a solar roof. The roof is expected to provide 8% of the energy to the entire building. The city of Santa Barbara is also going green by getting a solar rooftop installed downtown in the city. This will produce 348 KW of energy and will be managed by EI Solutions and Tioga Energy. Both the steps are being viewed as further boost to clean solar power. While one is symbolic, the other seems more practical.

The Dark Side:

The DOE has a solar rooftop and that new installation will be sufficient for only 8% of the building’s energy needs! What are they doing inside the building and why are they consuming so much energy? It seems that either the DOE headquarters needs urgent green measures on energy conservation or much bigger panels. Even domestic solar installations are doing better than this mere 8%. Get serious, DOE.
