Eco Factor: Home community gets powered by renewable energy.

In an effort to lower the carbon footprint of residential complexes, Comstock Homes is developing a new solar-powered home community that is being touted to be the largest ever built by a single builder. Dubbed The Villages at Heritage Springs, the community is coming up in Santa Fe Springs and will include 384 residences once it is complete.

The homes will feature the use of solar roof tiles that will be provided by San Jose-based SunPower Corp., and will provide renewable energy for the dwellings. The developers believe that these solar tiles will help reduce homeowner’s power bills by up to 60%. In addition to renewable energy generation, the dwellings will also feature the use of energy-saving technologies that include dual pane windows, high-efficiency heating and air conditioning systems, tank-less water heaters and energy-efficient lighting systems.

With plenty of sustainable features and renewable energy generators, the homes are set to sell at a much higher price. Townhomes in the gated community range in size from 139- to 1910-square-feet and cost between $385,000 and $457,000. Single-family homes on the other hand will be available in sizes ranging from 1763 to 2166-square-feet and will cost between $485,000 and $576,000.
