Eco Factor: Light charged by solar energy.

Umbrellas don’t just prevent us from getting wet, but also keep our extremely important electronic gear from succumbing to water falling from the heavens. Designer Becky Barber thinks that along with the conventional uses of umbrellas they have the potential to illuminate our living rooms too. Becky has created an innovative umbrella she calls the Solar Umbrella.

The umbrella uses thin film solar technology recently developed by Nanosolar as the fabric. A waterproof material is then used on top of the solar modules to make the system waterproof. Unfolding the umbrella automatically turns on the system and it begins generating electricity, which is stored in a built-in battery system. Whenever you need some illumination all you have to do is to just unfold the umbrella indoors and hang it to your ceiling in any way you want.

The Dark Side:

The umbrella will only harness electricity when it’s used during a sunny afternoon to prevent someone from the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the sun.
