Eco Factor: Software update will make Sky Box an eco-friendly device.

Watching TV is a passion for many, but a hectic day in the office means you don’t always turn the TV and the set-top box off before entering the dream world. Sky knows that tired people don’t necessarily care about the environment, and it’s up to the good old software that can better things and save electricity. The company is all set to roll out an update to its Sky Box software that will introduce auto standby feature to the device.

The update, which is scheduled to be released in July, will enable the device to go to sleep after two hours without a button press during night and after four hours during daytime. The device will initially flash a warning message, and if no one responds it too will go to sleep. The software should reduce Sky’s carbon emissions by 90,000 tons and shave off £20 million from the combined electricity bills of all its customers.

The Dark Side:

The software will only allow the set-top box to go into stand-by mode, however the TV will still be wasting electricity as usual. A better approach is to allow the set-top box to use the speakers of the TV to produce loud sounds to alert the owner to turn off the TV and the box simultaneously.
