Eco Factor: Automated home irrigation system saves water.

Research indicates that people are discouraged with home irrigation systems that require them to dig up their gardens or are too complex for a casual gardener to install. Designer James Seddon has come up with a prototype home irrigation system known as Hydra that not only adds to the aesthetic value of your garden, but also saves about 25% water.

Hydra comes with a range of sensors that monitor the amount of moisture present in the soil. The data is then processed, and if it’s found that the soil is low on water content the system starts to water the garden, thereby saving about 25% water that usually is lost due to unnecessary watering. The system is completely wireless and is powered by a built-in 9V battery that can be recharged using a DC charger. Apart from the water saving features, the system will also come with 4 LEDs that provide a soft ambient illumination of the lawn.

The Dark Side:

The system depends on the sensors that monitor the amount of water in the soil. Gardens don’t usually have the same amount of water in every spot. A garden might be wet at one end and dry at the other, so the sensors might not always work to perfection.
