Eco Factor: Domestic electricity usage monitor.

Recently we have seen some energy monitors that use innovative techniques to make people aware of their current energy usage habits. While some designers believe that a Wilting Flower would be up to the task, Jack Godfrey Wood and Fred Chak believe that the best way to reduce energy consumption is to tell people the amount they would spend annually on a device if it is kept connected to the power socket.

Wood hopes that such devices should be more common if we have to encourage people to use less in order to pay less. The projected cost of running an appliance at the same rate for a year is displayed right on the plug itself. If all appliances are having similar plugs then the cost can be added and the information gathered would help people remove all appliances that are not in use and use only those which are really in need.

The Dark Side:

The designer has not shown any information on how the cost of electricity would be fed into the plug. Since the cost per unit of electricity keeps on changing, we don’t see much use for the device once the cost is more than what is being fed into the plugs.
