In the process of keeping ourselves technically advanced, we forget about the thing that drives all our technology – Electricity.
By reducing energy use in the home, money can be saved on ever-growing electricity bills and the effects of global warming can also be reduced. Energy monitoring devices not only inform the user about the energy statistics of his house, but can also tempt a few to save it. Designed by Stuart James Sharples, EnergyMate is one such device, which not only records and displays domestic energy usage, but can also measure gas or water consumption of the house. It gets data from a network on sensors installed throughout the home and displays it on a wireless display unit. The units can be configured in pounds or carbon usage.
The Dark Side:
Initially such systems can tempt the user to save energy and water, but as time goes on these displays are kept in a hidden corner and no one really gets time to check them. The device could have done better if it could shut down appliances and disconnect water supply once it things that the items are not in use.
