Eco Gadgets: Energy-efficient laptop makes computing easy

Eco Factor: Modular laptop keeps components cool and promotes recycling.

Product designer Ed Boaden has designed an ecofriendly laptop that not only will save energy during use but will also promote recycling with a simple and modular design that is easy to repair and maintain. Modulus, as the laptop has been named, makes use of snap fittings instead of screws, which means you can put your tool bag away.

The laptop opens in a way which facilitates better air flow under the laptop, thereby reducing the amount of energy required to keep the internals cool. Using the hinged design, the user of the laptop will find it easy to reach the internal components, which facilitates repair and recycling. If anything goes wrong with the machine, you can just remove that particular component and ship it for repair or replacement.

The designer states that the laptop should be ideal for use in places such as schools, libraries and offices. Moreover, with thin client computers most of the processing is done on a central server so there is less energy consumption. Also, the parts that need to be replaced are sent in postage paid returnable packages which can then be either reused or recycled.
