Eco Factor: Study light powered by solar energy.

Late to realize the importance of renewable energy in today’s world, Indian electronics firm BPL has launched a dependable study light for students studying in remote areas of the country. The light should do great for students pursuing professional courses as in India most professional colleges are located in remote areas that are often battling power shortages and power failures.

Dubbed the “Studylite Lamp,” the lamp comes with a solar panel that charges a NiMH battery capable of lighting the 24 LEDs ring that the lamp is equipped with, for six hours. The lamp is priced at $33, which is much more than what a normal Indian student could afford.

The Dark Side:

Though solar energy is expensive than conventional grid-electricity, the price of the lamp is still much more than what’s expected. Moreover, without any light reflector, it would be hard for the students to concentrate the illumination on a book while reading.
