Eco Factor: Rainwater harvesting system.

Global warming and long lasting dry spells have encouraged one and all to use their creativity to design the most efficient and effective rainwater harvesting system. While some still use an old oil drum to capture rainwater, there are some who use their ingenious minds to design systems that can prove to be more useful. Tomas Bordingnon is the designer of one such rainwater harvesting system he calls the Lotus Flower.

Inspired by the petals of a lotus flower, the system has been developed with the collaboration of Green Cross Italia. Just like a lotus flower, the system opens its copper petals during monsoons and keeps them closed during the other part of the year to preserve the purity of water. Tomas claims that the system can be built using local materials like concrete, copper and wood. The choice of the materials will also ensure that the Lotus Flower doesn’t cost a fortune.

The Dark Side:

Considering the size of the system, its movable copper petals will require a huge amount of energy to open and close them.
