Eco Factor: Carbon-offsetting meter attaches to trees and eases carbon trading process.
Nitipak Samsen, a graduate from the Royal College of Art, has designed an ingenious way to offset a client’s carbon emissions. The system dubbed ATREEM (Automated Tree-Rental for Emission Encaging Machine) can be attached to a tree, where it can then be used to offset carbon emissions against the amount of carbon absorbed by the tree.
The system displays the amount of CO2 that the tree can offset and the charges that have to be paid for the same. After getting the required information the user can swipe his credit card and the system bills the client accordingly. The user interface of the system shows the intangible CO2 in terms of grams and how long the tree will take to offset the specified amount of CO2.
The amount of CO2 absorbed by the tree is calculated by measuring its girth. The designer wants the trees to be grown by emission trading companies in a nursery, which can then be planted at different locations to ease people’s access to the carbon sink.
