A Thanksgiving party means feast and fun. And a traditional feast is supposed to include a perfectly roasted turkey among the sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing and the pumpkin pie. They are yummy. But, the Americans are going crazy after seafood delicacies. But, this is threatening the fish stock populations. According to a report released by NOAA Fisheries Service, the consumption of seafood has risen for the third consecutive year. On average, Americans ate 16.6 pounds of fish and shellfish in 2004. But in the US we see a growing interest in sustainable fisheries.

For a fishery to be Marine Stewardship Council certified, a panel of independent scientists assess three key factors of a fishery including the health and size of the fish stock; the impact of the fishery on the marine environment such as non-targeted fish species, marine mammals and seabirds; and the fishery management plan. The Council claims, fisheries that can meet its standards will most likely be healthy fisheries in the long run.
