Eco Factor: Zero-emission electric car to be developed by Gordon Murray Design and Zytek Automotive.
The designer of the world’s renowned supercar, McLaren F1, is up to a new challenge. Gordon Murray Design and Zytek Automotive have announced an all-electric three-seater city car, which has been made possible by a £4.5m investment from the government-backed Technology Strategy Board.
With a total cost of £9m, the new research and development project will allow the team to develop four prototypes by February 2011. Dubbed T.27, the vehicle is expected to be the world’s most efficient electric car due to its low weight and a “clean sheet of paper design.”
The requirements can’t be fulfilled by using conventional steel construction design and drivertrains. Instead, an entirely fresh approach is being proposed that accepts no compromise in safety, comfort, performance, range, speed and space. The consortium believes that the lifecycle emissions of the T.27 will be 27% less than the nearest EV rival, which will largely be due to the unique design approach.
