Eco Factor: Pedal-powered trike assisted with gas or electric motor gets 150 miles in a gallon.

Car manufacturers are working hard to develop green rides that can achieve a benchmark of 100mpg. Auto manufacturers might be getting shivers from this number, but a simple, yet elegant machine from Goblin Motors surpasses the benchmark quite easily by achieving 150 miles in a gallon of gas, obviously with some leg support.

The vehicle is essentially a trike covered by a “speed sock” that carries a miniature 35cc or 50cc Honda engine that goes up to 40 miles on little more than a quarter gallon of gas. Of course to achieve that benchmark the vehicle requires you to pedal along as the gas engine generates a few horsepower to keep you going without much effort.

The company claims that the vehicle went up to the top of Mt. Lemmon in Arizona from the valley, covering a vertical distance of 6500 feet, effortlessly. However, with no radio, heater (don’t even think about an AC) and no passenger seat you would really want to jump over the cliff if you don’t get your iPod along. Priced at $6,500, the vehicle reaches a top speed of 20mph and with the electrical assist working along you can get a decent speed of 30mph.
