Eco Cars: Daimler launches first German hybrid car, still not green enough

Eco Factor: Hybrid car powered by a gasoline/electric hybrid engine.

The sleeping auto giants of Germany have finally woken up to witness a new change in automotive technology where thrust is given to fuel conservation rather than power and performance. Germany luxury car maker Daimler has launched its first hybrid car, the Mercedes Benz S Class, which is now available in Europe with an electric and a petrol motor to save emissions and reduce fuel consumption.

Being 10 years later than Toyota to enter the business isn’t the only challenge Daimler faces at the moment. Even with a hybrid engine, the car still churns out about 189 grams of CO2 for each kilometer the car is driven, which is about 29 grams more than the European average. The company still states that the emissions are reduced as non-hybrid variants of the car spew out as much as 234 grams.

Porsche is another brand which has plant a hybrid version of its Cayenne SUV in late 2010, and BMW too is preparing a new hybrid sedan from its Series 7 line this year. While the competition might now be tough with Toyota and Honda already releasing green variants of their most popular cars, this move by the German auto sector still needs to prove its worth.
