Eco Factor: Solar-powered bike plays music, has puncture-proof tires and can’t be stolen.
Bikes are undoubtedly the greenest way to travel, but these green rides lose their importance when compared with the latest cars which are stuffed with the latest in technology. Olympic cyclist Chris Boardman believes that in future bikes won’t be slow and will offer some technology to ease the ride.
Chris’s prototype bike design takes bikes beyond the advances in carbon-fiber frames and electric assist technology. The bike generates electricity from on-board solar panels, which fuels an electric motor to assist the ride.
The lightweight bike carries a carbon-fiber frame, spoke-less wheels and a mini-computer that is attached to the handlebars to count calories the cyclist is burning by monitoring each turn of the pedals. Another hi-tech feature the bike will be carrying is an ‘unbreakable’ locking device that allows the owner to open it via fingerprint recognition.
