Eco Factor: A sustainable design for the new Faculty of Science building at the University of Copenhagen.

Just a couple of days ago we got too see Sky Village, which was to be built in the suburbs of Copenhagen and here we are today with another sustainable building for the Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen. Designed by Christensen & Co Arkitekter A/S, this building will house some stunning eco technologies in an effort to make this building as sustainable as possible before the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference, which is to be held in the city.

Called the “Sundial” due to its distinct cylindrical shape, this building comes with adjustable façade louvers, which allows the building to get the most out of the sun all through the day. This not only provides natural light to the building but the proportion between the windows and the façade has been carefully calculated so that the building does not consume more energy for heating that the amount strictly necessary.

Solar panels will be installed on the roof to generate electricity for the building. Since solar energy generated is more in summers than in winters, excess summer energy will be stored underground and will be used in winters, when heating systems require more energy. This sustainable building will house a student advisory, administration, and a faculty club.

The Dark Side:

This stunning building incorporates all that we dream of all day. Storing surplus energy underground is one of the best incorporations in this building. Going carbon neutral is a great feat in any sphere and we really appreciate the effort of the architects.
