Eco Factor: Sustainable hotel in Yountville is America’s greenest.
Two years of green planning have finally shown their worth in Yountville, California. Bardessono, a new luxury hotel, restaurant and spa finally opened its doors to the public on Monday. Fitted with rooftop solar panels and various recycled materials used in its construction, Bardessono is being referred to as the “Greenest luxury hotel in America.”
The five-acre site, which originally was a vineyard, was converted into a luxury 62-room hotel, focusing mainly on sustainability. The project involves flat solar panels, water conservation systems, salvaged and locally grown walnut flooring and recycled construction materials. The linen provided to the guests is all organic and the hotel is kept clean using organic cleaning materials. Organic waste is composted on site using a composting system, and efforts have been integrated to minimize solar waste.
The open areas are covered with vegetation to make visitors feel close to nature. The 62-room hotel also has a 92-seat restaurant and bar, which is open to the public. The development expects to become Platinum LEED certified for additional appreciation. Visitors would pay somewhere around $600 a night for staying in this green, luxurious hotel.
The Dark Side:
The flat panel solar roof won’t be able to generate much electricity since the sun’s rays don’t point at the same location throughout the day. Had the hotel authorities made use of a sun-tracking system, the solar cells would have been more efficient.
