If you thought that the old electric car was a thing of the past, then you are in for one hell of a surprise. History has an odd and ironic way of repeating itself. While it might not do so in its entirety, it does seem that the electric car is going to be up and running again, even if it is in a form that is entirely different. By the early 1940’s the internal combustion engine did take over the electric cars and many did feel for a vast majority of time that the final word in the chapter of the electric cars had been written.
But then it seems the old cars are not going to go down silently. They have evolved in to finer machines and are now all ready to return the compliment to the internal combustion engine cars that once put hem out of business. Yes, it is a pulsating script right out of the heart of Hollywood. (If only had the writer’s strike continued, maybe I could have landed up with a job or two in the tinsel town). Anyway, cut to the chase, the Detroit Electric brand of electric cars is being revived by Zap Alias after a 100 year absence from the marketplace and they are coming to California in 2009.
The cars that were once common in the early 1900’s are now going to be rejuvenated and re-launched under a new name. The original Detroit Electric cars were powered by a lead acid battery that was rechargeable and later models used a nickel-iron battery. The cars of toady obviously will be using the state of the art battery technology, which is only developing with each passing day. While Ford and his engines put Detroit Electric out of business good six or 7 decades back, it is not likely that a returning Zap will do the same to Ford. But it will do well enough if it holds out on its own and not vanish once again in to oblivion. The cars are another step towards greener and cleaner roads and that is always a welcome sign indeed.
