Eco Factor: Chef’s farm grows vegetables indoors.

Dentsu Facility Management Inc. has developed the Chef’s Farm – a small vegetable plant that can be installed indoors. The vegetable plant, which will be released in Japan, is priced at $90,000 and makes it possible to harvest 60 heads of lettuce each day, enabling the owners to recoup the investment in about five years.

The Chef’s Farm uses 12 40W CFLs to replicate the sun indoors, which we believe isn’t the most efficient way to grow vegetables. The creators haven’t also provided any details of the amount of water that the garden requires. However, if the owners can make the system run on energy harvested by a few solar panels, they can definitely make a green statement.
