Curbing CO2 emissions without sacrificing electricity demand possible – Study

electricity demand

Until now researchers have stated that the increase in the demand of electricity means more carbon emissions raising the average temperature of the planet. The Electric Power Research Institute has released a study that contradicts the above mentioned belief. The study shows that advanced electricity generation technologies could reduce the carbon emissions by 50% without sacrificing the growth in demand for electricity.

Previous EPRI researches had shown that the lack of investment in advanced electricity technologies and reductions in CO2 emissions will make electricity and natural gas expensive and this will further reduce the economic growth. Advanced electricity technologies mean developing smarter electricity grids, hybrid vehicles and new advanced nuclear reactors and cleaning the traditional coal-fired power plants. If all this is taken more seriously then the demand for electricity will not have to be sacrificed to preserve the environment.

However, we still have to say that EPRI is assuming things, nuclear generation for example has always remained surrounded in controversies and the Soviet Union’s nuclear disaster has shown us what could happen if things in a nuclear plant go wrong.
