CES-2008: Sun powered laptop charger

nrg dock

Power of the sun could soon be in our laps. At the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show 2008, in the electrifying city of Las Vegas, personal solar solution company NRG Dock unveiled its range of solar chargers for a variety of products that include laptops. NRG Dock has two versions, the Home version and the Apartment version. The home version is a high end version where the 15 watt solar panel is connected to the dock inside the house. The energy is enough to run a laptop for hours together. The Apartment charger on the other hand is aimed at smaller devices like iPods, MP3 players and mobile phones. It comes with a suction cup that attaches a smaller solar panel to the window.

The panels get charged even from daylight or light inside a room and store the energy in the power station for use whether day or night. So one could power iPods, mobiles, gaming consoles and music players even while away from power lines. Imagine sitting on the beach and working on your laptop without worrying about power supply or the inbuilt battery running out.

Many chargers are already available in the market that use solar powered batteries but retailers are sceptical about this charger which charges directly from a solar panel. To look at the performance of these chargers we’ll have to wait till second or third quarter of 2008 when the company plans to bring the products out in the market. The retails prices are aimed at $800 for Home version and $500 for Apartment version.
