Cabestan develops the world’s first solar-powered mechanical timepiece

Eco Factor: Mechanical watch powered by onboard solar panels.

Cabestan Watches has developed a unique timepiece that will be powered by onboard solar cells that are specially designed for small surfaces and low luminosity. Dubbed Sol Invictus, the timepiece has taken the new iconic chain and fusée, drums and vertical tourbillon from the WTV and combined them with a revolutionary new technique for producing and treating silicium crystals for efficient solar cells.

With this unique technology, the Sol Invictus will have the honor of being the first mechanical timepiece in the world to make use of solar energy. The timepiece features the use of two brushless motors – one for rewinding the movement and the other for setting the time. A miniature controller has also been incorporated for regulating and amplifying the electrical charge and the speed of the motors.

The designers have placed the spectacular Cabestan movement in the center of the timepiece with the two solar panels perfectly placed at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock. The motors and the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are positioned under the solar cells. Priced at $560,000, this amazing solar-powered timepiece is based on the designs of 19th century scientist Léon Foucault.
