Named as the PUU-BO, this profoundly sustainable conception from BIG studio is a modernistic eco-community that is constructed wholly of prefabricated wooden components. It won the first place at Finland’s E2 (Ecology and Economy) Timber Competition.

In a bit of modern paradox, Finland being one of the leading producers and exporters of wood still has most of its structures made of concrete. So in a bid to prove the sustainability as well as endurance of wooden structures, the architects have planned to ambitiously design a whole eco-community constructed of timber in Kouvola, imbued with 8 storied apartment buildings along with lower level town houses and parks. The diligent aftereffect will be the lesser environmental footprint of timber in comparison to concrete.

The zoning will be flexible, incorporating both office and residential land use patterns. Moreover, the ‘naturalistic’ compound will follow the natural contour of the land and at the same time provide excellent views of the river. It will include ‘green’ facilities such as public park areas, playgrounds, private concealed gardens and even saunas. In a bold architectural move, BIG studio has sought to redefine the aspirations of older pre-fabricated housing projects such as the illustrious Dom-ino system of Le Corbusier, by integrating a more free-flowing design along with an adroit style.
