Ben Nelson’s DIY electric car

With the vast development in technology, people started preferring electric cars which are environment friendly than normal cars. Following the same path, Ben Nelson, a self-employed video producer in Oconomowoc has taken steps to build by himself an electric car.

As you are aware, electric cars have plug-in battery machines together with electric motors. These cars sometimes also run with a combination of electricity and some other fuel such as gasoline. Electric cars create less pollution, which enable them in being eco friendly.

Nelson in 2008 bought a normal economy car for $500, which he decided to turn into an electric car. Nelson, who believed in learning by doing, made a thorough research on the cars through library books. He also obtained advice as what to do and took help of some people familiar about electric cars.

Nelson first bought electric motors for $50. Electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical. He also bought new brushes for $50 that conducts current between stationary wires and moving parts. He removed his existing car’s gas trunk and the transmission and at the same time sold some of the parts of the car such as gas tank, engine, radiator, exhaust system, which were no longer needed for $550.

After electric motors, the other most important component of electric cars is the batteries. These batteries too convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy. Nelson has bought batteries for $12 each and has used six of them for car power. Propane generators are also used in these cars to charge batteries. Propane generates are odorless and nontoxic. These generates are also more secured than the normal gas generators and are cost effective.

This electric car is very safe for normal local driving and as per Nelson the car covers around 45 mph and drives 20 miles or more before charging it again. Nelson has adopted a vacuum system for better brakes.

Thus, anyone who have interest in converting a normal car into an electric car and who feels that one can learn only by doing things has to definitely follow Nelson. Electric cars are not only eco friendly but are also cost effective and easy for local drives.
