Bacteria to clean nuclear waste-contaminated groundwater!

shewanella oneidensis

Increasing terror across boundaries and letting in more and more money and researchers in producing nuclear weapons. But, do you know, In the U.S. alone more than 2,500 billion liters of groundwater are contaminated with uranium as a consequence of nuclear weapons production? This is estimated by the Department of Energy.

To find a solution to this growing concerns and health hazards leading from the contamination, scientists from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) say they discovered some common bacteria — Shewanella oneidensis — that could convert deadly heavy metal into less threatening nano-spheres!

These bacteria are found to be able to convert soluble radioactive uranium into a non-toxic solid form — called uraninite. Though, more research needs to be done before using these bacteria on a large scale, it is surely a break-through towards the rising concern.

Congratulations Jim Fredrickson for leading this research work, and am sure will find a solution to the disastrous after-math this contamination can bring across the globe.
