Eco Factor: Australia’s bid to host the SKA radio telescope includes renewable energy generation.

The Rudd Government in Australia is proposing that it is ready to invest about $47.5 million in projects to ensure that solar energy and geothermal energy will be used to power the SKA radio telescope if it is installed in Australia.

The investment has the potential to cut power costs by $5 million each year and slash carbon emissions by 12,000 tons annually. The project will also assist the CSIRO to achieve its 2015 carbon neutrality goal.

The $2.5 billion project bid for the SKA radio telescope is a joint venture between Australia and New Zealand. The project involves 20 countries and the telescope will be the world’s most powerful radio telescope. The decision on the location of the SKA between Australia-New Zealand and Southern Africa isn’t expected until 2012.
