‘Artificial seismic waves’ may squeeze more oil from natural reservoirs

earthquake waves

The population along with their demands for oil is increasing in leaps and bounds. Squeezing more oil out from natural reservoirs has now become a necessity. Scientists found a way to extract oil from the natural reservoirs – by creating artificial seismic waves, similar to those that occur during an earthquake!

According to the research, shaking increases permeability. And this permeability controls the flow of fluid through rock, irrespective of its being water or oil. Thus, this phenomenon can be put to use for extracting oil from natural reservoirs.

Dr Emily Brodsky of the University of California, Santa Cruz and colleagues made these findings. The study is reported in the journal Nature.
