Aptera – Miles to go before I sleep!

I thought this car looked pretty strange the first time I saw it, but it has since really grown on me. I think the proof of the pudding will be in the test driving. The idea is to make the most fuel-efficient vehicle the world has ever seen, and to make it stylish, incredibly safe, and fun to drive. It comes 100% electric or in a hybrid version that’s gets 230 mpg at 55 mph! Would be fun to take it for a spin! The Aptera weighs 850 lbs and is made almost entirely of lightweight composites, based on ‘Accelerated Composites’ Panelized Automated Composite Construction (PAC2) process. It accelerates from 0-60 mpg in 11 seconds, and has a top speed of 95 mph. Video after the jump.

The Aptera will have a range of 120 miles on electricity alone, with a 600 mile range for the hybrid version when fully fueled. The vehicle seats two in the front, with one seat in the back big enough to fit an infant car seat, according to company specs. With that seat removed and used as a cargo area, it can fit up to 15 bags of groceries or two full-size golf club bags. It’ll be $500 to reserve your car. They come in one color – white – which two variations: an all-electric model that gets roughly 120 miles per charge ($26,900), or the electric-gas hybrid that gets 330 mpg ($29,900). It has solar panels that keep the inside at the right temp even when the car is sitting on the street. Both models can reach 60 mph in about 10 seconds, or about the same as a Honda Insight. That time is achieved with a single-gear transmission and would improve, Fambro says, as Aptera experiments with a two-speed tranny that might replace the single-speed or be offered as an option.
