An array of Lanterns powered by renewable energy

Let the light never cease to exist as long as you need it with this collection of lanterns powered by renewable resources. Here is a fine way to save power & also never run short of some light when you need it. With the entire world moving forward towards trying to replace renewable sources of energy with alternate sources of energy, this is a fine way to get started & be a part of the environment conscious movement.

Here we present to you two viable options depending on where you live & how lazy you are. If you are willing to expend some of your own energy then Freeplay’s Indigo is a good bet. It uses wind-up energy to run for a considerable amount of time. While it might not be the brightest around, it still is of fairly good use considering that it works on mechanical energy. It has a built-in Ni-MH rechargeable battery. The battery can be charged via two power sources – AC power, and by hand cranking it. A 60 second wind will provide up to 2 hours of light in the lowest setting or 5 minutes at maximum brightness. The lantern is a good option as it also has a ‘search light’ mode specifically designed for using as a beam of light. It is available for about $35.

Then we have the solar powered lanterns for the more lazy ones like me. Hey, when you have the mighty Apollo to power you, why waste your own energy? These lanterns are pretty good when it comes to lighting up the place & they are surely better than the wind-up ones in that regard. They can light up the room in a nice way for good 3 hours after a charging of 8 hours in the sun. That offers a nice deal, but once hey run out of charge you cannot wind up some light as in the case of the wind-up ones.

The yellow lantern (in the picture above) is a ‘motion activated’ solar lantern, and the silver one incorporates an AM/FM radio with weather channels. They both use 9W fluorescent bulbs for illumination, and have a built-in rechargeable 6V seal lead acid battery. It can be obtained for around $69.
