Eco Factor: Amtrak proposes plans for a two-track system and a Super Express for fast and green commuting.
Looking at old, incomplete tracks in Connecticut, which cannot even take the burden of the Acela high-speed train that currently runs on them, Amtrak recently proposed a new plan for high-speed rail in the Northeast Corridor. The $117 billion upgrade over the next 30 years will allow a 220 mph bullet train to cover the distance between Boston and Washington D.C. in just 3 hours and 23 minutes, a distance that is presently covered in 6.5 hours.
The project will see the completion of the 426-mile, two-track system by 2040, along with a “Super Express” that will provide people with fast and green traveling. This plan is expected to raise the present 12 million ridership to 33.7 million passengers. The construction work will also create nearly 40,000 temporary jobs, and 120,000 jobs from economic benefits.
