Eco Factor: Device uses wind energy to generate mechanical power for desalinating water.
With over two billion people in the world lacking access to safe drinking water, researchers over the globe are trying solutions such as desalination. Though desalinating water is an energy-intensive process that requires reverse osmosis of water, several designers have come up with systems that use renewable energy, such as wind and solar power, to first generate electricity, which can later be used to power the system.
US-based Engineering for the Earth’s Aeolus system is different, as it utilizes wind energy not to produce electricity, but directly produces mechanical power from wind. The system, which uses produces mechanical power, is used to drive a pump that takes water from the source. The pressure drives the water through a series of filters including the reverse osmosis membrane to produce potable water, which is stored for use.
