Antonov debuts 3-speed transmission for efficient EVs

Antonov 3

UK based Antonov Plc has come up with a 3-speed transmission system for electric vehicles. This new 3-speed transmission system for EVs by Antonov will feature in the Limo Green research project of Jaguar. The purpose of this 3-speed transmission system is to enhance the energy efficiency of EVs and provide a better driving experience to the auto lovers.

In November last year, Antonov, in partnership with Jaguar and MIRA got the contract for designing and developing a high efficiency transmission system suitable for hybrid electric vehicles from Technology Strategy Board of United Kingdom. Initially, a 2-speed transmission system was developed which was earlier used in the first Limo Green prototype.

But the need for a 3-speed transmission system was felt to enhance the performance, speed and range of the vehicle further. The biggest benefit of the 3-speed transmission system developed by Antonov is the fact that it will enhance the energy efficiency of future EVs by almost 15 percent, without hampering the performance of the vehicles.

Therefore, the Antonov 3-speed transmission would help greatly in increasing the range of EVs in the times to come. The soundness of the design of this transmission system is evident from the fact that it easily gets fitted into the existing transmission tunnel of the vehicle without the requirement of any kind of modification to the overall design of the system.

Apart from improving performance and range, this 3-speed transmission system also helps in lowering the overall weight of the vehicle by allowing the use of a low powered torque motor. Other benefits of the system includes lower noise with higher cruising speed, better launch acceleration and improved hill climbing capability.

Compared to a 2-speed transmission system, the 3-speed one requires less gear change while driving since it keeps the vehicle at an optimum speed for a longer period of time. Antonov is currently also involved in another project for developing five prototype electric delivery vans for commercial applications in partnership with Smith Electric Vehicles.
