Post quake Haiti is still under the trauma. Now, with a cholera outbreak in full swing that has tremendously affected the population especially in the western Haiti, troubles have not come to a halt. But amid great troubles, an innovative idea to bring relief to the people of Haiti and secure its future has been encouraged and appreciated with the highly credited and talked about 2011 Foster + Partners Prize awarded in consultation with the Architectural Association School of Architecture. The award has been presented to Aditya Aachi, a young diploma scholar from AA School of architecture, for strongly addressing the themes of sustainability and infrastructure in his proposed project ‘Haiti Simbi Hubs’ which aims at developing sustainable sanitation infrastructure while leading the path to draw attention towards collectively combating increasing cholera outbreaks at the earliest.

With a vision of developing a sustainable system for freely available public sanitation, the project seeks to bridge the heavy gap between the needs and plans of this highly unplanned city which requires heavy changes to serve today’s needs. The proposed plan would bring out revolutionary changes in water and sanitation related usage, planning and coordination while addressing issues related to drainage and earthquake safety. The proposed plan also acknowledges the need for localized sanitation along with food preparation and storage facilities without sparing challenges of sewage and water treatment. Encouraging local art and identifying the developmental requirements, the plan proposes to use local elements in the best and efficient manner.
Some high points that emerged as the key to this project, which includes the rural to urban water distribution, usage of grey water for irrigation, making way for quick and natural drainage for hurricane like situations. The consideration of the larger urban hubs liable for enhancing surroundings provides a hope for Haiti.
