The winning entry for ASM Academy of Sciences Malaysia promises high sustainability

ASM Academy of Sciences

The interior lobby of this grand design proposal for a high tech research center may look like some conventionally affluent office apace, but the combined progressive design elements does allude to a more unique and rather sustainable characteristic. Conceptualized by the Italian design team of Francesco Bezzi, Massimiliano Brugia and Valerio Campi, this was the winning entry for the ASM Academy of Sciences Malaysia, to be built in Kuala Lumpur.

The interesting form of the conception comprises of high vertical panels unfurling at different angles, but bound at their bases by a solid yet continuous volume. This expansive nature of the building shape supposedly symbolizes the ‘geometry of a lotus flower that opens to the sun’. And in-sync with this naturalistic allusion, the design considerations play their part for a much greater degree of sustenance.

The already mentioned vertical panels will have a dual functionality concerning both lighting and power generation. Their angles will be automatically directed by the solar path, thus allowing in optimum quantity of natural sunlight. The effervescent spatial nature of the interior will create an artistic yet voluminous play of light and color.

On the other hand, the panel transparency can be blocked, and in this case the photovoltaic cells embedded into their surface will capture the pure light to produce clean power for a myriad of facilities. And to notch up the level, even rainwater collection systems are to be installed on the roof. By incorporation of all of these features, the architects aim to have a LEED platinum certificate for the overall ambitious plan.

Coming back to the interior, the comprehensive design will encompass a altogether different micro-climate of its own, by inclusion of green spaces and terraces. Furthermore, the optimized natural lighting will be used to nourish this fascinating naturalistic system in order to accentuate upon the overall environment friendly ambience. So at the end of the day we have an adroit example of eco architecture imbued with dollops of high tech credentials.
