Buensalido Architects’ ecofriendly design for the CCP Complex in the Philippines

Artist’s Center and Performing Arts Theatre

The entry of Buensalido Architects, for the competition for selecting the best design for the CCP (Cultural Center of the Philippines), is a brilliant plan that highlights what all the CCP Complex hopes to pr,ect – the ecological, cultural and tourism qualities of the Philippines.

The design proposal by the architects highlights the importance of the cultural diversity in the country by symbolically using weaving as the theme, just like natural fabrics such as Jusi fiber and Buri thread are interwoven to create a durable fabric similarly, the country’s strength and unity also lies in the cultural diversity of the country.

The architectural plan too, comprises of structures interwoven together like many small threads that emanate from the main Cultural complex. However, while designing this huge project, the architects have made sure that the structure is sustainable and ecofriendly and hence it would be B.E.R.D.E (Building Ecologically Responsive Design for Excellence) compliant (equivalent to LEED certification), thus making the center a ‘green’ one.

Atria would be used throughout the design of the buildings so as to provide natural ventilation to the premises. Natural light would be used in order to save on energy and the design of the interiors would help to promote that. Rainwater would also be harvested though rain funnels and would be utilized for non-potable and garden watering purposes. Solar heat would be tapped for providing power to the premises, which would be done through glass panels that would also offer a picturesque panoramic view of the city and the expansive sea.
