Kawasaki Kisen, a Japanese shipping company, is exploring the possibilities of making a greener car carrier which can carry the cars to their destination without over-polluting the environment. An avant-garde ship is in making which will run on liquefied natural gas rather than regular fuel. This transition in fuel technology will cut carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 40%.
Kawasaki Kisen is a big name in the field of marine transportation and has its presence across the world map with its head office in Tokyo, Japan. The carrier will be about 156 yards long and will be capable of carrying 2000 cars with a capacity of 5000 tons. The ship will run on liquefied natural gas which helps in cutting down the carbon dioxide to a great extent. LNG is being used in heavy trucks and buses but is not common in the cargo ships. Kawasaki Heavy industries, an ally of Kawasaki Kisen, will provide the gas engines for the same. The gas engines will cut down the nitrogen oxide emissions by as much as 90% as compared to the conventional diesel engines.
The decision of making this carrier came because of the growing concerns about rising fuel prices and subsequent high operational costs. The designers are making the carrier as per the parameters set by Norwegian experts who are entitled to approve technology standards for ships and carriers. The carrier will start ferrying cars from 2015 or 2016 in the continent of Europe.
