Amidst increasing concern for global warming, and hunt for alternative energy and energy efficiency, President of India, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam plans to light up Rashtrapati Bhawan (President’s House) with solar power. A new structure need to be constructed for mounting the solar panels, as this is needed to avoid cutting down about 15-20 trees in the compound.

The project will cost about Rs 350 crore. The proposed structure will double up as a convention centre. To set up a 5-MW solar photovoltaic power project at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the National Thermal Power Corporation and Power Finance Corporation have formed a special purpose vehicle (SPV).
