The International Paper Co.’s plans to burn used tyres as fuel used to produce paper. It would be allowed to burn tyres for two weeks once approved by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Readings were taken on the stack emissions.
Preliminary data of the readings show that this process might lower pollution than the limits allowed, excluding nickel and some other chemicals, according to Maureen Wren of the state Department of Environmental Conservation. A heavy metal nickel is a health concern. But, how environment-friendly this process would be, is yet to be found.
Donna Wadsworth, the company spokeswoman said,
the emissions will be monitored “second by second” and any time a result “even approaches” the limit, the burning will be shut down.
