The green carpeted grasses can do more than feeding the cattle and soothing our eyes. They could also solve 19 percent of global electricity needs! They may be the best source of bio-fuel. Not just that! They also soak up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
The bio-fuel-producing grasslands could yield more energy than the traditional bio-fuel crops – like corn and soya — of per hectare, according to David Tilman and colleagues at the University of Minnesota, US. And, to add to this, the process is ‘carbon negative’ i.e. it captures more CO2 compared to what it releases into the atmosphere.
Compared to the fuel yields of corn, over 50% more energy can be obtained from the grasslands per hectare, scientists claim.
