Ever since civilizations started, man has been making best use of animals be it for transportation, ploughing fields, irrigation of land etc. With technological advancements, these roles of animals faded away. But with the hitches in technology, are we actually reverting back to using animals to power our needs or has it just become a trend? The verdict is yours. To me, it looks like a vicious circle.
One of OLPC Foundation’s team in Mumbai has demonstrated cow-powered generator to charge laptops. According to Arjun Sarwal, the arrangement uses a system of belts and pulleys to drive a dynamo taken from an old Fiat, with the cows, that are available in plenty in that area. His trials with wind, and water power proved to be unfeasible, in that area and a gas-powered motor proved to be too expensive and therefore this experiment.
The idea should be a lot beneficial to introduce some essential technologies and computer facilities in small villages and towns. Nevertheless, I don’t think it is fair to use animal power for our greed.
